Campaign in Review #1
Session 1
Gwen, Fletch, and Melynos are recruited to deal with orc incursions into the country of Bree. Yet when their division, commanded by a dwarf by the name of Redforge, made it to the area, they find that the Bree forces are the ones invading the orc lands. The Bree forces walk into a trap set up by the now united forces of all the orc tribes, as well as some of their allies (ogres, trolls, humans, etc). Redforge commanded his troops to withdraw south as fast as they could. When the way was blocked, Redforge sacrificed himself to allow the troops to make it through. The senior commanding officer, a human by the name of Tyrus, had already escaped.
When the group got back to the Bree lands, they found that Tyrus had blamed the failed incursion on Redforge and his troops. Claiming they were deserters and traitors. Gwen, Fletch, and Melynos were now on the run from the very forces they had once tried to aid. Deciding to get out of the area until things died down, they went and got passage on a ship heading to Freeport.
Meanwhile the up and coming sorcerer Bran, found his entire village killed, including his family and familiar. He had been gone being trained to control his powers by a more experienced sorcerer. The only clue to who had done this horrible deed was a strange symbol painted in yellow. Bran's mentor did not recognize the sign, but suggested that the temple of the god of knowledge in Freeport might be able to provide some insight. With this single clue, Bran got passage to Freeport, on the same ship as others by coincidence.
Saphire had just finished the last of her training to become a druid. Her first assignment from the order was to escort a special ally and to determine the nature of the creature a tooth came from. The order believes it is from a long dead animal, but the tooth appears to be fairly recent. The order is interested in this and wants Saphire to learn all she can about it. They tell her the tooth was obtained from the temple of the god of knowledge, at the city of Freeport. Saphire and her new companion, apparently a "cat-person", made their way to a ship headed to Freeport. The same one the others were taking.
While on board, heading towards Freeport, these folks met a young woman by the name of Dinora, who was also going to Freeport. An outgoing talkative woman, who attempted to learn as much as she could about the other people on the ship.
On the way, the ship ran into some unnatural fog one night. Out of the fog came a ship crewed by undead. The undead tried to kill and drag the crew off, but this group of people were able to fight them off for the most part (1 crew member was lost).
Upon arriving at Freeport the travelers were accosted by a press gang, but due to Dinora's wits they not only were able to tell the gang to shove off, they also extorted some money from them. Their interaction didn't go unnoticed as a priest approached them and offered them a job. The priest, a human named Egil, explained later at a bar that a friend of his, a human librarian by the name of Lucius, had recently disappeared. Lucius had disappeared before, for 5 years. The church of the god of knowledge, to which both were members of, has assumed he just wandered off again, but Egil doesn't think so. He asks the party to investigate.
They visit Lucius's house and discover that it is abandoned, but they find a note. Also in the basement, there are shelves and a display case, all of which have been emptied. The note gives hints of a orc pirate captain, by the name of Scarbelly, that Lucius was going to try to contact.
The group decides to next pay this pirate captain a visit. But due to the crew being unwilling to allow the party on board and disturb the captain, and Fletch's innate dislike of orcs, the meeting almost turns into a blood bath. Due to Dinora's and Bran's attempts at friendship, the orcs decide to allow the intruders to leave with their lives (just barely). The group decides to bed down and rethink their approach to contact Scarbelly.
